From Side Hustle to Full-Time Gig - Mastering the Art of Freelancing

Almost half of all working Americans report having some sort of side hustle. Some of these are just for extra cash while others aim to build their own freelance business. In fact, many of these individuals would like their side gig to become their primary source of income if possible.

In a recent study, 37% of those who have a side hustle started it to pursue a passion or find more ways to be fulfilled in their life. Some of the most popular side hustles include a personal trainer, photography, or babysitting. Almost all of these can be done from the comfort of one’s home and often require little upfront investment. However, these types of hustles can be a bit volatile and may lead to inconsistent cash flow from week to week.

The pandemic also shifted people’s views of job security, leading to a rise in those seeking alternatives to traditional employment. In fact, a majority of individuals who start a side hustle claim that they needed it to make ends meet or cover unexpected expenses. For some, it’s simply a matter of being fed up with the standard corporate structure and wishing to be their own boss.

Regardless of the reasons, many people report that their side hustle is providing them with a level of satisfaction not found in their full-time employment. And the good news is that a side hustle doesn’t have to be permanent – it can be scaled back down or even turned into a full-time business.

One of the most important factors that contributes to a successful freelance career is networking and building up a solid client-base. This is especially true for those in specialized industries that can be very competitive or require significant training to get started. Those who are able to effectively network and manage their clients can often be rewarded with a steady stream of work.

As a result, more people are turning their side hustles into full-time gigs. The question is, how?
First and foremost, a successful side hustler needs to dedicate enough time to their gig. Some, such as a freelance photographer, may need to invest in new equipment and software in order to expand their business. Others, such as a personal trainer, may need to create an online presence in order to reach more potential clients.

The other important factor is to ensure that the side hustle doesn’t conflict with any other commitments.

For example, if someone works as a sales representative, they should not be engaging in activities that compete with their core job responsibilities. In addition, it is helpful to communicate with the supervisor of their full-time position and ensure that the gig won’t interfere with company policies or procedures.

Finally, it’s also a good idea to keep track of all earnings and expenses in order to avoid any surprises down the line.
